St. Kitts and Nevis - Where it is Decidedly Not Snowing

Firstly, we'd like to apologize for our recent absence... There was a snowpocalypse that pretty much owned the East Coast. Ellen was trapped under 8 inches of snow and 2 inches of ice and had to walk to the grocery (uphill both ways) to get her beer. But, the sledding has been prime!

sleddddddding!

So, back to business. What did y'all think of Lithuania? "Meh," says Pinky.

We've been thinking about what region we haven't visited in a while. Haven't been to Central or South America in a bit, but if we're planning for longevity, we've gotta stretch those out. We really need to knock out some of those island nations. Maybe we'll do a Caribbean week soon or something.

For today (blizzard of the decade, day 4) let's tune in to some island music! Wanna head to St. Kitts and Nevis? Pinky's parents like to vacation there and his mom just takes pictures of goats.

we can almost feel the tropical heat from here!

Native Americans have been hanging out on the islands for about 5,000 years. When Columbus pulled up in 1493, the Kalinago people (Carib) had been there for a few hundred years. The French and English made their way to the islands over the next couple hundred years. Unlike other islands, the indigenous population allowed the Europeans to settle there. Bad idea. They were massacred shortly afterwards.

we don't blame those europeans for not wanting to leave

The Brits and French used the islands as the center of their Caribbean expansionist efforts. Even though the Spanish kicked them out for a minute, the British ended up taking full claim in the early 1700's. Though they're geographically super close (2 miles apart), St Kitts and Nevis were governed as two separate islands until the late 1800's. Then the British were all "This is dumb. Shack up with Anguilla." This colonial/territorial/governing arrangement lasted for a little under 100 years at which point Anguilla split off and became it's own British state (where it remains today). But St. Kitts and Nevis are still stuck together.

i don't think you need a spyglass to see that guy's head...

Nevis claims they don't get the support they need from St. Kitts, and it seems that there's a good bit of resentment between the two. Maybe St. Kitts dumps on Nevis because they're jealous about Alexander Hamilton. He was born there around 1757 or so and ended up getting his face on the American $10 bill. We all know the federalism stuff and the duel story, so let's move on.

just seeing his face makes us want to go buy crap at dollar general.

Nevis has tried to split off, but the referendum failed. They still are constitutionally allowed to succeed, after a few provisions are met. Will it happen? We dunno. Ok, so St. Kitts and Nevis achieved independence in 1983 (the same year we were born) and became the youngest sovereign state in the Americas. Yay for our birth year buddies!

Ok, let's tune in and see what's happening down there. Enjoy!

Note from the Snowed in Editors: Do yourself a favor and just listen to another station. It started out with some decent reggae this morning, but is just awful narcissistic club music right now. Check back later in the afternoon and enjoy something else for now. We'll be in Seychelles...

Portugal - Ave Aveiro!

Oh hey! Man, we don't know how we're gonna top that Bangladeshi station! It was a super-duper, to say the least!

And, today we visit our 25th country!
Only 232 (palindrome alert!) more to go! (depending on what we recognize as nations)

What do you say we head to Portugal today?

So blue!

Pinky had the chance to go there about a decade ago when he was 16ish. But for some outlandish reason, he passed on it and have been kicking himself ever since. His family was on one of those "if it's Tuesday this must be Belgium" trips, and at the very end of it they could have carried on from Madrid to Lisbon. His mom was up for it, but Pinky and his sister were travel-weary from a month on the road and were ready to go home.

He's always regretted that decision and feels obligated to go one day, just in rectification. His mom is going to beat him to the punch when she gets to go next year for some embroidery workshop and his brother worked a show there a while back. He said there are some CRAZY black and white tile sidewalks and plazas there. We're promptly adding those tiles to our "must see list."

We won't be in the capitol today though. Let's head off to the Aveiro district in the central coastal area! It reminds Ellen of Malta, especially the boats. Hopefully the music will be as awesome as these pictures!

Antarctica - Serenades from Snow Hill

Did y'all enjoy our little visit to Libya? Us, too!

We think we've developed a real affinity for Arab pop. Anyway, it's gonna be a scorcher today! What do you say we pack up our Bedouin tent and head as far south as we can go? Here's a commercial-free radio station from Antarctica! It's a bummer that our friend Phil left before we could come to visit, but we bet that if we give him a call he'll let us know where to get a good snow-cone!

Hey look! Here's Antarctic currency!

It's not technically legal tender, but still cool huh?

And, you can even see what's going on down there with this neat-o time lapse movie! Also, since Ellen is a map geek, you should check out these maps. Holy Pete, we love technology!

Well, if anyone needs us, we'll be having a PBR and playing shuffleboard at the Polar Bar! (...sigh... we miss the Polar Bar)

Party in Paraguay?

Man, that Malaysian radio station kinda sucked last time, huh? It picked up a little in the afternoon, but those DJ's doing the same not-even-funny prank calls at every interlude made Pinky want to grind up his eyeballs and pour the slurry into his ear canals.

Anyway, let's move on to Paraguay today! Pinky’s gotta leave for Tennessee in a little bit so he won't be able to hang out and listen all day… but hey! You guys go ahead and have fun at your work stations without him. Let us know how it goes!

Malaysia - Killing it in Kuala Lumpur

So did you have fun in Beirut, Lebanon last time? Yeah, us too!

Today let's head over to
Kuala Lumpur, the capitol of Malaysia and Pinky's mom's birthplace (before independence.) Lots of western and Chinese cultural influence in Malaysia, but this seems to be a contemporary station that sticks to Malay stuff for the most part. Probably gonna hear a few English or Chinese songs sprinkled in though. Enjoy!

The whole site is in Malay, but click on the box in the upper right corner that says "KLIK UNTUK DENGAR" to stream live radio. Brace yourself for ridiculous DJ's!
