Bosnia - Swinging Sarajevo

You know how you have a soft-spot for countries that you did projects on when you were a kid? In 2nd grade, Pinky did a presentation on Yugoslavia. He and his mom made baklava and some really good flaky goat cheese pastries. From our fractured memories, we can assume that the state had fractured by then, so who knows why the hell he picked it. He probably heard the name on the news and took a shine to it. We're glad to report that he is still obsessed with Croatia. He has a scarf from there that he wears all the time in cold weather.

Anyway, when we think about the region today, connotations of war, rape, and ethnic violence are predominate, which sucks. But, we don't really have much else beyond that exposure to go on. A lot of us grew up reading Zlata's Diary in school, and No Man's Land is still one of Pinky’s favorite movies. He saw it alone at The Manor in Charlotte when it came out. No one would go with him. And, boy does he hate seeing movies alone. There were only two other people in the theater.

One time in college, while trapped in the handicapped shower, being pelted with a barrage of air soft pellets, surrounded by her terrified and screaming friends, Ellen noted that “that is what Bosnia must have been like.”

Anyway, the Yugoslav wars left a lot of scars on the region. And, just take a glance at what's going on with Kosovar independence. That shit is bonkers.

But let's head over to Sarajevo, Bosnia and see if we hear anything today that can give us a new impression. PS: Bosnia was the answer that solidified Ellen’s win of her 5th grade National Geographic Geography Bee. She’s such a smarty.

This post is a special dedication to our friend Kesi, who is finally getting to visit Bosnia (vicariously, through this blog)!

They were playing a lot of cool regional stuff earlier, but the last few songs have been American classic rock or country. Hopefully this isn't a trend...
